At least five tankers damaged in Strait of Hormuz
At least five oil tankers damaged in Strait of Hormuz. This waterway carries about one-fifth of the world's oil supply.
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said multiple tankers hit naval mines or were struck by projectiles. The tankers were struck as they went through the Strait of Hormuz.
At least three caught fire. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations also reported a tanker struck by two unidentified projectiles about 93 kilometres north of Qatar.
The Strait of Hormuz is critical to global energy supplies. It normally moves roughly one-fifth of the world's oil use.
Fighting between the US, Israel and Iran began in late February. Since then, Tehran has severely limited traffic through the waterway.
Shipping risks stay high as long as the conflict continues.

Why it mattersWhen global oil shipping is disrupted, energy prices can rise higher. Supply chains worldwide may also face problems.
