Dance festival asks: who controls your identity online?
Seven hundred students from 27 Canberra schools create original dance pieces exploring how technology, gaming and algorithms shape their sense of self.
Young people at Ausdance ACT's Youth Dance Festival use dance to explore big questions about who they really are in the digital age. Some year 11 students explore how people create different versions of themselves on different social media platforms.
The real self and the edited self blur together. Year 10 students look at how algorithms feed everyone the same content.
This pushes people toward being the same, not their true self. One group's piece starts with dancers moving in tight unison.
Then they take off white shirts to show colours underneath. This shows breaking free from what the algorithm wants.
The festival runs at the Canberra Theatre Centre on October 27, 28 and 29.
