Artist opens free installation to help people process grief and loss

Clare James reopens her free installation The Place for Lost Feelings in Healesville on October 24-25.

The Yarra Valley artist created the installation after her friend's 10-year-old son was killed in a tree fall in 2019. Clare built a space of flowers, branches, moss and pebbles.

Guests could light candles to acknowledge their pain. In 2022, she and her sister Kate opened the first public version in an old Healesville hall.

The response was remarkable. People came from far distances carrying deep grief.

One man with terminal cancer lay in front of the installation for the first time facing his mortality. Now Clare is reopening the space after her own experience of deep loss.

Her husband Mark suffered a massive stroke. The event is free with bookings recommended.

Trauma response workers will be available to support visitors.
