Newcastle Yowies win back-to-back women's Koori Knockout titles
Newcastle's Yowies defeated Redfern 14-6 at Raymond Terrace. They won their second back-to-back women's Koori Knockout title.
The Newcastle Yowies won back-to-back women's titles at the Indigenous rugby league carnival. The Yowies beat Redfern All Blacks 14-6 at Raymond Terrace on Monday.
Taneka Todhunter played a key role in the win. Todhunter flew to Newcastle the day after scoring a hat-trick for the Australian Prime Minister's XIII in Papua New Guinea.
The 24-year-old Parramatta Eels player returned to the Yowies after four seasons away. Former Knights front-rower Caitlan Johnston-Green was moved after the win.
Johnston-Green held her daughter in her arms as teammates celebrated. The Yowies also won the under-13 boys and under-15 girls tournaments.
Newcastle earned hosting rights by winning last year's carnival in Tamworth.
