Christa Pike still alive more than an hour after lethal injection attempt
Christa Pike lived more than an hour after lethal injection, according to her lawyers.
Pike, 50, was scheduled for execution on September 30 in Nashville. She remained conscious and audibly snoring after receiving two doses of pentobarbital.
Witnesses said the process was unusually long, with the execution chamber curtain drawn and opened again many times. Associated Press journalist Kim Chandler has seen many executions.
She said Pike looked clearly awake as it began and gasped several times. Pike's legal team filed an emergency petition saying she needed urgent medical care.
She was taken to a hospital. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee ordered all 2026 executions paused and called for a complete independent review.
This follows a failed attempt in May. The staff tried for more than an hour to set up an IV line but could not.
