Drone strike on Sudan market kills more than 150 people

South Sudanese officials say Sudan's military struck a market in the disputed Abyei region on Monday. More than 150 people were killed.

Officials in South Sudan say Sudan's military carried out drone strikes on a market in Abyei. Abyei is a disputed region that borders both countries.

The attack happened on Monday. The death toll has risen to at least 153 people.

An initial count showed 73 deaths. Flames were still burning at the scene on Tuesday.

Recovery efforts continued as people searched the site. Some bodies were burned beyond recognition.

Three diplomatic sources, an aid worker, and a conflict expert spoke to Reuters. They said the strike hit a fuel depot in the market.

The Rapid Support Forces, a paramilitary group, had used this depot. Sudan's military has not yet responded to requests for comment.

The attack is part of a broader rise in Sudan's war. The war began in April 2023 between the armed forces and the RSF.

It has caused a major humanitarian crisis.
