Israeli election rival pledges to end Hamas rule within 18 months
Gadi Eisenkot, former military chief and Netanyahu's main opponent, promises to end Hamas rule within 18 months if elected.
Gadi Eisenkot, 66 years old, is the former chief of staff of Israel's military and leads the centrist Yashar party. Eisenkot promised to end Hamas rule in Gaza within 18 months if elected prime minister in the October 27 election.
His son and two nephews were killed in the Gaza war. Eisenkot accused Netanyahu of failing to achieve Israel's stated war aims three years after the October 7 Hamas attack.
According to Eisenkot, this goal could be achieved two ways. First, through US President Donald Trump's peace plan, which Netanyahu's government accepted.
Second, through military and operational strength. Netanyahu's Likud party mocked the pledge, noting that Eisenkot's coalition partners include Arab MPs.
Israeli polls show neither Netanyahu's camp nor the opposition will get an absolute majority in the coming election.
