Duterte cleared to stand trial for crimes against humanity
Former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte, 81, is cleared to stand trial for crimes against humanity on November 30.
Medical experts examined Duterte and cleared him to face multiple counts of murder and attempted murder connected to his country's war on drugs. The campaign began when he was mayor of Davao and expanded nationwide during his 2016 to 2022 presidency.
Death squads killed not only dealers and drug producers but also addicts. Suspects were often summarily executed without trial.
Human rights organisations estimate about 30,000 people were killed. Duterte was arrested in Manila in March 2025 on an ICC arrest warrant.
He was flown to the Netherlands. His defence lawyers cited health reasons when he failed to appear at several earlier hearings.
