Parvovirus outbreak triggers urgent testing in Perth
Highly contagious virus affecting puppies and unvaccinated dogs found in Balcatta suburbs.
Canine parvovirus has been detected in Balcatta and surrounding suburbs near Perth, prompting vets to issue warnings and tighten precautions. The virus attacks a dog's gut and immune system, causing lethargy, appetite loss, vomiting and severe diarrhoea.
Puppies and unvaccinated dogs are most at risk. The virus spreads through contact with infected dogs, their faeces and contaminated surfaces, and can linger in the environment for weeks.
Karrinyup Small Animal Hospital is now testing dogs in car parks while staff wear full protective gear. Cases were also confirmed at Wanneroo Animal Care Centre in late September.
