Lake Macquarie finds homes for people sleeping rough at Toronto foreshore
Multiple agencies worked together. They housed the last two people sleeping in a public park on the Toronto foreshore.
Between 15 and 20 people were sleeping rough or camping on the Toronto foreshore in Lake Macquarie. Five to six were regularly sleeping overnight.
Agencies held a roundtable meeting. Lake Macquarie City Council, Homes NSW, NSW Health, the Salvation Army and other services offered emergency housing and support.
Homes NSW provided "surge funding" for immediate accommodation. The council removed rubbish and cleaned up the site.
MP Greg Piper said the focus was treating people with dignity. The aim was to move them to safer housing and provide ongoing support.
Minister Rose Jackson said ongoing outreach and expert services built trust with rough sleepers. This helped them find stable housing.

Why it mattersIt shows how different government levels can work together to solve homelessness practically. They treat vulnerable people with respect. They don't simply move the problem elsewhere.
AustraliaThe approach offers a model for other NSW communities facing rough sleeping in public spaces, balancing community concern with genuine support for people in crisis.
