Government bids $100m+ to send Bennell-Pegg to space
The Albanese government made its final offer to the European Space Agency. The offer will fund Katherine Bennell-Pegg's historic space mission.
Katherine Bennell-Pegg is the 2026 Australian of the Year and could become the first astronaut to launch into space under the Australian flag. The European Space Agency wants at least $100 million for her seat on a 2028 space station mission.
On Friday, Science Minister Tim Ayres confirmed the government had submitted its final offer. Two other Australians reached space before her.
They were Andy Thomas and Paul Scully-Power. Both went on NASA missions.
In 2022, the European Space Agency chose Bennell-Pegg from more than 22,000 people. The Australian Space Agency says its program returns $7 for every $1 spent.
Supporters argue the mission would open up research, learning, and industry chances. These would go beyond just a trip to space.
- At least $100 million
- ESA cost estimate
- 2028
- Mission launch year
- More than 22,000
- Applicants in 2022 selection
- Around 2030
- ISS end of life
Why it mattersThe ISS will reach the end of its life around 2030. Missing this window could mean Australia waits decades to send another astronaut to space.
AustraliaSuccess would mark the first time an Australian astronaut travels under the Australian flag, and would open research and technology opportunities for Australian scientists and companies testing work in space.
