Four dead, 30 hurt as passenger train leaves tracks in Pakistan

The train, travelling from Karachi to Peshawar, left the tracks early on Tuesday in Sher Shah city.

A passenger train derailed in central Pakistan early on Tuesday. It killed four people and hurt 30 others.

The train was going from Karachi to Peshawar. It went off the tracks in Sher Shah city, in Punjab province.

Railway spokesman Kaleem Akhtar said rescuers recovered all four bodies and evacuated the injured from the train's 14 cars. The injured were taken to hospital, and emergency responders and paramedics were sent to the scene.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief. Both leaders urged authorities to give the injured the best possible medical care.

Train accidents are relatively common in Pakistan. The rail system has suffered for decades from too little investment, outdated tracks and aging signals.

In 2023, 10 cars of a passenger train derailed in southern Pakistan, killing 30 people.
