Melbourne Cup weekend road toll reaches nine as child rescued from flipped SUV

Ivan Harrison, 43, died when his SUV hit a motorcycle. His son Henry survived with an upper body injury.

On Sunday evening, Ivan Harrison was driving his seven-year-old son Henry in Brighton East. Their SUV hit a motorcycle at South Road and Olive Street.

The impact flipped the vehicle, killing Harrison and the rider. Bystanders pulled Henry from the wreck, finding him hanging upside down by his seatbelt.

Henry suffered an upper body injury but was conscious and calling for his mother. Henry's mother, Tania Benbow, praised the quick community response.

She urged other parents to use proper booster seats. She said the restraint likely saved her son's life.

Harrison had moved to Australia from the UK. She said he was an "amazing, positive and social father" who loved his son.

Henry had just been picked to play for a local football academy. The collision came as Victoria's roads recorded nine deaths over the Melbourne Cup long weekend.

Four riders were killed on motorcycles. Police are investigating the intersection, which locals say is dangerous.
