Modi and Putin deepen India-Russia ties ahead of BRICS summit
PM Modi and President Putin met in New Delhi to discuss trade, defence and energy before the BRICS summit.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks in New Delhi on Thursday, their second meeting in two weeks. Modi and Putin discussed cooperation in civil nuclear energy, fertilisers, defence, critical minerals, manufacturing, railways and steel.
The meeting comes on the eve of the BRICS summit in New Delhi, which will include Chinese President Xi Jinping and Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian. India is one of the world's biggest buyers of Russian oil, with Russia's share of Indian crude imports reaching a record 51 per cent in July as Middle Eastern disruptions increased reliance on Russian supply.
Modi told Putin in their earlier August 31 meeting that the Ukraine war needed to end for humanity's sake and that India supports peace efforts. India maintains the Ukraine conflict can only be resolved only through dialogue and diplomacy, not through sanctions on energy or fertiliser trade.
Putin visited India in December 2025 for their annual bilateral summit.
