Rooster stranded on river netting rescued and named River Phoenix
RSPCA WA rescued a rooster stuck on netting above the Canning River and is seeking an adopter.
A rooster that had gotten stuck on protective netting was safely rescued from the middle of the Canning River. RSPCA inspector Bridie Creedy, a trainee, and Department of Biodiversity conservation staff waded out to get the bird near the Greenfield Street Footbridge in Ferndale on 14 October.
The rooster, named River Phoenix, was perched about 2 metres above the water. The netting was installed for water plant restoration.
River Phoenix was not tangled. He was carried safely back to shore, though wet from the rescue.
Inspector Creedy said it was one of her more unusual rescues. River Phoenix is now at the RSPCA WA shelter in Malaga and is available for adoption.
The bird is doing well and is already putting on weight.

Why it mattersThis rescue shows what happens to unwanted roosters. People buy unsexed chicks. The chicks grow into noisy males. Then people abandon them.
AustraliaRSPCA WA is reporting a surge in roosters being surrendered or abandoned in Western Australia, with local governments restricting them in suburbs but rescue organisations stretched to help.
