Australian activist Hiep Tran charged with terrorism after Cambodia vanishing
Vietnamese authorities charged Melbourne activist Hiep Tran with planning terrorism. He vanished in Cambodia almost two weeks ago.
Hiep Tran and Norwegian-Vietnamese colleague Duc Thuan Nguyen flew to Cambodia on September 15 and have not been heard from since. Vietnamese authorities announced they charged the pair and a third man with planning terrorist activities.
US-based pro-democracy group Viet Tan disputes the charges. The group says the men were forcibly taken to Vietnam.
Viet Tan's representative called the allegations complete fabrications. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed Australia is giving consular support to Tran's family.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is making urgent inquiries with Vietnamese authorities about the case.
