Tooth removed from teenager's eye in world first

A 16-year-old Indian boy had a fully formed tooth surgically removed from his upper eye socket, the first such case ever recorded.

Doctors in India have removed a fully formed tooth from the eye socket of a 16-year-old boy in what medical specialists say is the first case of its kind. The teenager noticed painless swelling of his eyelid for about a month before two hard white points began poking through the skin.

Scans revealed a complete canine tooth had grown in the space between the eyelid and eyebrow. Surgery was performed to remove the tooth and doctors confirmed there was no evidence of anything else wrong.

The condition is called an ectopic tooth, meaning a tooth that grows in the wrong place. Only this ectopic tooth has ever been found in an eye socket before.
