NSW preschools fear closures from January funding overhaul
Community preschools say they will lose at least $221,695 each in 2027 under the new model.
From January 1, NSW replaces its preschool funding with a new universal model. Directors say the change cuts funding massively.
Albury Preschool director Jo Barton estimates her centre loses at least $221,695 in 2027 alone. The loss makes it hard to run.
Twelve directors from regional NSW met MP Justin Clancy on Friday. They demanded the changes be paused and proper consultation happen.
A petition against the major change gathered more than 30,000 signatures in a single week. NSW Education Minister Prue Car says the new model will create 10,000 extra places.
It will also boost staff pay.

Why it mattersIf preschools close, families lose access to early education. Parents may struggle to find childcare while working.
AustraliaThe change affects 700 NSW community preschools and around 50,000 children; potential closures would cut a major source of childcare across the state.
