Maya Joint's Pan Pacific run ends in Tokyo quarterfinal

Joint, ranked 94, lost 7-5, 5-7, 6-1 to Uzbekistan's Kamilla Rakhimova in the WTA quarterfinal.

Maya Joint knocked out at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo after an impressive run to the quarterfinals. The Australian had beaten sixth-seeded Sorana Cirstea and Cristina Bucsa to advance.

Rakhimova won the first set 7-5 and Joint took the second by the same score. Rakhimova ran away with the third set 6-1 to claim victory.

Joint landed 66 per cent of first serves and hit five aces, but Rakhimova converted six break points from twelve chances, while Joint managed only three. The late-season Asian swing has boosted Joint's confidence after a difficult year.

She reached the Korea Open final last month and has climbed back toward form after her ranking fell from a career-high number 28 in February.
