Dapto Public School wins national Wakakirri dance award
Dapto Public School's 108 students won the national Wakakirri award for their dance-theatre piece Enter the World of Beatrix Potter.
Students at Dapto Public School erupted in joy when they learned they had won the national award in Wakakirri. The annual festival celebrates schools telling stories through dance and movement.
The school performed a piece based on characters from Beatrix Potter's beloved children's books. After winning a regional heat in Wollongong in August, the students performed at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts in Sydney for a chance at the national award.
The win comes in the school's 18th year of competing in Wakakirri. Year 6 student Airlie Gallagher performed as a dragonfly.
She called it just amazing to be part of the production from year 3 onwards. Teacher Jane Nordstrom said the win was validation of months of hard work and repeated rehearsals.
