Deputy Premier donates cancer wig to hospital library
NSW Deputy Premier Prue Car was diagnosed with cancer in June 2025. She donated her treatment wig to help other cancer patients.
Prue Car was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer last year through routine screening. She has been treated at Sydney's Chris O'Brien Lifehouse.
Prue Car is now recovering well and following her medical team's advice. During treatment, her stepdaughter nicknamed her wig Barbara.
This brought humour to a difficult time. Car has donated Barbara to the hospital's wig library.
It will help other patients undergoing cancer treatment. Synthetic wigs cost hundreds of dollars.
Handwoven versions cost thousands. Hair loss during treatment is one of the first things women worry about after a cancer diagnosis.
Anything that helps them feel in control makes a real difference. Car is using her public profile to urge women not to delay screening.
Just over 51 per cent of eligible women in NSW take part in free mammograms. Many are missing the chance to catch cancer early.
