Father breaks hand fighting machete-armed intruder at home
Daniel Shoppee fought off a machete-armed teenager during a home invasion, breaking the intruder's jaw while fracturing his own hand.
A teenager armed with a machete confronted a family at a Port Melbourne home about 5:30am Wednesday. Daniel Shoppee, 38, was inside with his parents, wife and three young sons when his family's dog alerted them.
Daniel's mother screamed and he rushed out with his father to find the intruder at the gate. Shoppee reached over the gate, grabbed the teenager's arm and knocked the machete down.
The teenager forced the gate open and a fight broke out. The intruder suffered a broken jaw and broken nose; Shoppee sustained a fractured hand.
Police arrested the teenager. The boy, 17, was later charged with attempted aggravated burglary and possessing a prohibited weapon.
He had served 49 days for prior offences, released a week before. 7NEWS understands he is behind a string of attempted break-ins armed with a meat cleaver and an earlier break-in where he allegedly stole an elderly woman's car.
