Thurgoona golfers take on pro rivals at NSW Senior Open
Three Thurgoona members qualify to compete against Australia's top over-50 golfers in a $150,000 tournament.
Three amateurs from Thurgoona Country Club will play in the NSW Senior Open starting Friday, facing some of Australia's most prominent golfers over 50. Daniel Huggard qualified by winning the Thurgoona Bowl.
Huggard played last year and shot one-over par in round one but missed the cut. Only one amateur made the cut last year, even though many can shoot under par.
Huggard, a scratch-handicapper, says the gap is mental, not about how you swing. He felt intense mental strain last year.
He threw in a four-putt at one point but then birdied three straight holes. His weakness is getting ahead of himself mid-round and losing focus.

Why it mattersThe story shows how much harder professionals find it to score well against amateurs. The difference comes down to how they handle pressure, not their swing technique.
AustraliaNSW golf fans can watch amateur and professional talent compete at the free-entry event, with the pro-am starting Thursday at 9am.
