Canberra IVF costs force patients to Sydney for cheaper treatment
Canberra patients travel to Sydney to get IVF at a quarter the local price. One clinic is set to close.
Samantha Watson tried IVF at a Canberra clinic. Watson was quoted over $20,000.
Multiple rounds could cost $40,000 to $60,000. Adora Fertility is a Sydney clinic Watson found through a Facebook group.
Watson paid just $2,000 for a successful cycle. The clinic bulk-bills most services through Medicare.
It offers telehealth appointments. Watson needed only two day trips for egg retrieval and embryo transfer.
Adora has seen a 37 per cent jump in ACT patients this year. This is partly because IVFAustralia's Deakin clinic closes in December.
This leaves just two providers in the capital. Vanessa Ferguson, Adora's chief executive, said the demand suggests a future Canberra clinic is possible.
But it would be expensive to set up.
- Over $20,000
- Watson's Canberra quote
- $2,000
- Watson's Adora cost
- 37%
- Adora's ACT patient increase
- December
- Deakin clinic closing
Why it mattersThe cost gap forces people with fertility struggles to travel or face tens of thousands in out-of-pocket costs. This prices many out of treatment.
AustraliaCanberra will lose half its IVF clinics by year's end, potentially forcing more families to travel interstate or go without treatment.
