California fires point to hotter risks for Australia
The article links California's wildfire conditions to climate drivers that could leave southern and eastern Australia more exposed this spring and summer.
California is confronting a rapidly escalating wildfire season fuelled by extreme heat, drying vegetation, drought and strong winds. As of 24 July, the state had recorded more than 3,800 wildfires this year, burning about 79,000 hectares.
The article says a powerful El Nino and possible positive Indian Ocean Dipole would bring drier, warmer weather to Australia, creating similarly dangerous conditions in the south and east.
