Transport NSW wants three traffic lights on Albury's Borella Road

Transport NSW plans to install lights and remove the Schubach roundabout. Residents worry traffic will shift to side streets.

Transport NSW plans to install three sets of traffic lights along Borella Road. Transport NSW also plans to remove the Schubach Street roundabout.

Albury councillors voted unanimously on Monday to ask the agency to explain the proposal. The proposal has sparked community concern.

Residents worry the lights and roundabout removal will push traffic onto quieter residential streets like Electra, Cadell and Alexandra Street. Bed and breakfast operator David Henricus argued roundabouts are better because they slow drivers more than lights do.

Transport NSW believes the roundabout will become overloaded within three to five years, council staff said. Borella Road has four lanes, which makes intersection management complex.

Lights are safer for cyclists and pedestrians than roundabouts, according to council.
