Hidden velodrome beneath John Cain Arena could cost Melbourne millions to remove
A velodrome built for the 2006 Commonwealth Games bid now sits unused beneath John Cain Arena, limiting its potential.
John Cain Arena opened in 2000 with a built-in 250-metre velodrome, part of a $65 million project to win the 2006 Commonwealth Games. The velodrome has been unused since 2019.
The arena now hosts tennis, basketball, netball, and events like bull-riding and Cirque du Soleil. The cycling track takes thousands of seats and is now seen as a liability rather than an asset.
Removing it is nearly impossible because it is built into the structure. Development Victoria studied removal plans, but leaders now suggest demolishing and rebuilding the whole arena.
The site has tight space constraints. AusCycling wants to use the venue but cannot get confirmed access.
The arena's aging infrastructure raises bigger questions about Melbourne's sports future.
