Bellroy opens first stores as Australian brand shifts to physical retail
Australian accessories brand planning around 20 stores across three continents in next five years after 16 years of online and wholesale sales.
Bellroy, founded in 2010, has sold wallets, bags and tech accessories in over 150 countries, generating $146 million in revenue through online and wholesale channels in the last financial year. The Melbourne brand is now opening its first standalone store on Little Collins Street in the CBD.
New York and Kuala Lumpur locations will follow within six months. CEO Lina Calabria said the company plans around 20 stores across three continents over the next five years.
Each store will employ 'carry guides' who help customers choose products based on their needs. Calabria stressed the stores must be profitable from year three onwards.
The expansion reflects shifting retail trends as online growth slows in mature markets.

Why it mattersAustralian retail is shifting back toward physical stores as pure online sales growth slows, and an established brand opening profitable stores signals customers want to experience products in person before buying.
AustraliaBellroy's expansion gives Melbourne shoppers a flagship local brand location and may boost awareness, while the company's success could encourage other Australian online brands to open physical stores.
