Woolworths drops roast chook 'bachelor's handbag' as retail merch boom hits

Woolworths and Macca's are releasing branded bags as retailers tap into a booming merchandise trend.

Woolies will release an insulated bag designed to look like a roast chook, complete with a handle and detachable strap, from 14 October in select stores and online. The thermally insulated design has earned the 'bachelor's handbag' nickname from shoppers.

Macca's announced a limited-edition McCafe Tray Bag in deep fig with gold hardware and a zip pocket, with 100 free bags dropping on Friday. The trend is spreading fast: Aldi has released branded streetwear, Bunnings released a bum bag, KFC offers bucket hats and sunnies, and Costco partnered with Nike for branded sneakers.

Retailers are betting that fans want to wear their loyalty and turn everyday products into collectibles.
