Lightning bolt captured with four different strike types in one frame
Ivan Sajko's lightning photo in the 2027 calendar captures four different types.
Australia's Bureau of Meteorology released its 2027 weather calendar. It features photos from professional and amateur photographers across the country.
Each photo includes a scientific explanation of the weather event shown. A lightning strike captured by Ivan Sajko in Port Macquarie stands out for showing four different types of lightning in one frame.
The judges said it was remarkable from a science viewpoint. The calendar also features a newly recognized cloud formation called a cataractagenitus cloud.
It forms over waterfalls and was captured at Kakadu for the first time. The cover image is a cross-section of a hailstone.
Bureau scientist Joshua Soderholm photographed it under special lighting in a Brisbane freezer.
