Five Sydney Swans players were suspended after allegations at Melbourne's Pullman Hotel in August. Police questioned Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner, Nick Blakey, James Jordon, and Riley Bice over the incident.
No charges have been laid months later. Riley Bice has been cleared and is treated as a witness.
The Herald Sun reports that charges may be "difficult to prosecute" after police reviewed statements. A brief of evidence is expected by the end of October.
The players are expected to return when pre-season training begins in November.
