Buhrich House II wins Herald's most beautiful heritage home award
The small Castlecrag house designed by architect Hugh Buhrich with his wife, Eva, an architect and columnist, in 1972 won the Herald's most beautiful heritage home award.
Buhrich House II sits on the waterfront above Sydney's Middle Harbour, hidden in bushland. The two-bedroom home was designed by architect Hugh Buhrich with his wife, Eva, an architect and columnist, and won the Herald's award from about 220 nominations.
The copper wave-shaped roof and floating wall appear to hover over the water. Inside, a red fibreglass bathroom was moulded by Buhrich, a yacht lover.
A narrow deck with no handrail juts over a steep drop. Judges praised it as rational and experimental.
