Helen Haines wakes in hospital, asks about staff and bystanders, not herself

Helen Haines, who lost both legs in a 4WD ramming, asked about her staff when she woke in hospital.

Helen Haines woke in hospital and immediately asked about her staff, community, bystanders and first responders who helped her. The question showed her character, according to her friend and fellow independent Allegra Spender.

Spender relayed Haines' words from her husband Phil at a parliamentary tribute on Tuesday. Agriculture Minister Julie Collins said the response was typical of Haines, who focuses on others.

The ramming happened outside Haines' electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria, at the start of last week. Haines, 65, had both legs cut off in emergency surgery.

Her condition is now serious but stable.
