Pope Leo appears publicly less than two weeks after lung cancer surgery

Pope Leo appeared publicly less than two weeks after lung cancer surgery to call for peace in Yemen.

Pope Leo appeared at his window overlooking St Peter's Square for the first time since having lung cancer surgery on October 13, waving and smiling to crowds. The 71-year-old pontiff had the lower lobe of his right lung removed.

Pope Leo made a heartfelt appeal for the violence in Yemen to stop, expressing particular concern for Taiz where he said the population lacks food, water and medical help. Doctors said last week he would need no further therapy, suggesting the tumour had not spread.

The pope also prayed for victims of a terrorist attack against Orthodox faithful at a church in Jordan on Friday. He cancelled his planned attendance at a peace meeting in Italy to focus on recovery.
