Caulfield Cup stewards clear riders in fatal fall inquiry
Racing Victoria stewards found that slight horse movements, not jockey error, caused the fatal Caulfield Cup fall.
Stewards concluded their inquiry into Saturday's Group 1 Caulfield Cup, where a race fall near the 300-metre mark left one horse dead. Half Yours fell after being tightened for room, bringing down Ohope Wins, who was later put down.
Evidence from three riders was heard. Two jockeys, Mark Zahra and Jye McNeil, got care from medics in a hospital.
Stewards found that Green Spaces and Kings Valley both shifted slightly under pressure. This made them lose balance and interfere with Half Yours.
Stewards found no careless actions by any rider. No further action was taken.
McNeil has been cleared to ride at the Geelong Cup on Wednesday. Zahra is booked for the Cox Plate this weekend.
- 300-metre mark
- Incident location
- Ohope Wins
- Horse euthanised
- Mark Zahra, Jye McNeil
- Jockeys hospitalised
Why it mattersThe finding closes a major racing incident. No penalties were given. It clarifies that multiple slight movements rather than any single rider error led to the tragedy.
AustraliaRacing integrity in Australia's premier horse races depends on clear stewards' findings; this inquiry outcome sets precedent for how racing accident investigations are conducted.
