Two 14-year-old Hunter mates turned a candle idea into an award winner

Jake Rooney and Lucas Dagg, now 14, have won three business awards.

Jake Rooney and Lucas Dagg were just 12 when they decided to start their own business. Now 14, the Hunter Valley mates make and sell artisan candles under the name Wick Boys.

The idea came from a gap in the market: their parents run cellar doors and needed a reliable candle supplier. The boys taught themselves to make candles, then sold to cellar doors and local businesses.

Hunter Valley Wine Country market gave them their first market stall. The Wick Boys have won three awards, including Hunter Region young entrepreneurs of the year.

The Wick Boys have been included in the Good Food and Wine show at the ICC in Sydney in November. The show is the biggest event the boys have attended since their business launched.
