Ali G returns to screens 20 years on in Sacha Baron Cohen prank film
Sacha Baron Cohen revives Ali G in a new film of live-action hoaxes and pranks.
Sacha Baron Cohen has revived Ali G, the character he created over two decades ago, in a new film. Rather than tell a story, it shows a series of live-action hoaxes and pranks.
The film features three characters: Ali G himself, plus Erran Morad (a Mossad officer turned security consultant from Baron Cohen's TV series Who Is America?) and Dr Nira Cain-N'Degrocello, a caricature of a self-appointed liberal scourge of cultural appropriation.
Ali is now broke and aging. He pulls pranks on unsuspecting people to earn money, though the film tells viewers who is and isn't in on the gags.
Baron Cohen targets anti-woke figures and others across the political spectrum. The Guardian reviewer noted it is sometimes funny but that Baron Cohen struggles with his character's irrelevance and celebrity recognition has faded significantly since Ali G's peak.
