Rural coalition demands 3km wind farm setbacks
About 12 community action groups formed Regional Voices Queensland. They demand 3km minimum setbacks and upfront decommissioning bonds for wind farms.
The coalition held its first major meeting beside the Wambo Wind Farm at Diamondy. Diamondy is 280 kilometres north-west of Brisbane.
Member for Maranoa David Littleproud helped organize the event. More than 70 people attended.
Communities want stricter protections for neighbouring farmers and residents affected by renewable energy projects. Queensland's wind farm code requires noise and performance criteria at neighbouring properties.
It does not set a separation distance. Since 2025, new wind farm applications must assess impacts and provide financial guarantees for decommissioning.
The coalition says the wording is vague. Farm co-owner Glenn Franz has 13 turbines within 3km of his property.
He said existing protections do not address visual impact or future removal costs. Agricultural industry representatives also seek protections for neighbouring producers beyond project hosts.

Why it mattersStronger setback rules would protect farmer assets and health from wind farm operations. Financial guarantees would ensure proper site restoration.
AustraliaThe coalition's push for Queensland planning law reforms could set a template for wind farm oversight across regional Australia.
