Family reflects on Jason James after workplace inquest
Four years after Jason James died in a workplace accident in Tasmania, his family attended a three-day coronial inquest seeking answers.
Jason James was 29. On July 20, 2022, an excavator he was operating tipped over at a worksite near Evandale, Tasmania.
Jason died in the accident. A three-day coronial inquest was held in September 2026.
The Launceston Magistrates Court looked at what happened. The inquest heard an argument between Jason, the site supervisor, and the excavator's main operator.
The operator reportedly quit and left the site. With the operator gone, Jason was the only person on-site with the necessary licences to operate the excavator.
But he lacked critical experience. His family came from Victoria to attend.
They heard ten witnesses talk about the day he died. His sister Aime said the process was stressful and felt like reliving his death.
But she hoped better safety rules would prevent future tragedies.
