Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will lead tributes in Federal Parliament on Monday, a week after the alleged attack on Independent MP Helen Haines. The 65-year-old Indi MP was hit by a Toyota LandCruiser at her Wangaratta office, leaving her a double leg amputee.
Surgeons fought to save her right leg but both limbs had to be amputated due to the severity of her injuries. A fundraiser set up in her name has raised more than $1.1 million, with donations going to Save the Children.
Haines remains in serious but stable condition at Melbourne's Alfred Hospital following multiple surgeries. The outpouring of support reflects the respect and affection Australians have for the MP.
