Victorian opposition vows to scrap Labor's gas appliance ban within 100 days
Victoria's opposition leader Jess Wilson promises to scrap Labor's gas appliance ban if her party wins the election.
Victoria's opposition has committed to scrapping Labor's ban on gas appliances within 100 days of winning the election. Opposition leader Jess Wilson cited cost and choice as the issue.
From January 1, 2027, all new homes in Victoria must be all-electric. From March 2027, hot water systems that need replacing must use electricity instead of gas.
Wilson said Victorians should decide how they heat and cook their own homes. The ban is modelled to cost households up to $300 a year more.
One of Australia's largest home builders says it adds up to $15,000 to the cost of a new build. Commercial operations face bigger hikes: a large manufacturer could see gas bills rise by up to $111,000 a year.
The government argues the ban lowers power bills by reducing gas demand.
