Trump calls for New Mexico to rename itself New America
Trump posted on Truth Social demanding New Mexico change its name to New America, claiming home values and incomes would rise despite offering no evidence.
President Trump called for New Mexico to rename itself to New America on Monday, posting on Truth Social before heading to a midterm rally in Kansas. He claimed home values and incomes would rise from a name change but provided no evidence.
He also repeated unfounded claims about rigged elections in the state. Trump has previously suggested renaming New Mexico and in September posted a map with Mexico crossed out and America written over it.
His renaming efforts extend beyond this state: he signed an August executive order to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America as part of a trade dispute with Canada, and last year ordered the Gulf of Mexico renamed Gulf of America.
He has also floated renaming the Strait of Hormuz the Trump Strait. However, Trump lacks the constitutional power to unilaterally rename states; any such change would require action by the state itself.
New Mexico's name dates back to the 16th century.
