Ballarat's athletics track closes after more than 60 years
The Llanberris Athletics Reserve, home of Ballarat track and field since 1959, held its final senior competition on Saturday.
Ballarat's athletics community gathered at the Llanberris Athletics Reserve on October 17 for the venue's final senior competition. The track has been the city's sporting heart for more than 60 years, since 1959.
Athletes marked the end with a symbolic final lap together. Athletics Ballarat chairman Matt Jenkins said the reserve had been crucial to local sport, hosting school carnivals and community events that many Ballarat residents remember fondly.
The council is now working to find new uses for the site, which sits among residential areas and involves multiple landowners and lease agreements. A new Ballarat Regional Athletics Centre with a blue synthetic track opens in Wendouree on October 24, starting with round two of the season.
