Wollongong man jailed after stealing designer wallet, using stolen card for
Baz stole a Fendi wallet with $400 and used stolen cards to buy alcohol and cigarettes in six transactions totalling $418.40.
Jason Martin Baz, 46, was on parole when he rode his bicycle to a Wollongong car park at 4am on August 8 and stole a Fendi wallet from an unlocked vehicle. The wallet held $400 in cash and credit cards.
Baz and a female co-accused brought items to the counter at Liquorland while she tried to pay with a stolen card. The purchases ranged from $26 to $96, totalling $418.40 for alcohol and two boxes of cigarettes.
Baz was arrested three days later holding the same jumper he had worn when stealing the wallet. He pleaded guilty to larceny, dishonestly obtaining a financial advantage by deception and possessing a prohibited drug (20 millilitres of heroin).
The judge noted Baz had minimised his crime by claiming the victims were "rich". He was sentenced to three months in jail, backdated to his arrest, and is expected to be released in November.
