USS Colorado named first US submarine for AUKUS deal
USS Colorado, a 10-year-old Virginia-class submarine, will base in Western Australia from late 2027 under AUKUS.
The United States has announced USS Colorado, a Virginia-class submarine, as the first American vessel to arrive in Australia under AUKUS. The 10-year-old submarine will base at HMAS Stirling in Western Australia from late 2027.
Up to four US submarines and one from the UK will rotate through the base. During this time, Australian Defence Force personnel will learn to operate nuclear submarines.
The Virginia class is the US' most advanced attack submarine. It travels at speeds of more than 46km/h, compared to Australia's Collins-class subs at 37km/h.
Australia's own nuclear submarines will be conventionally armed. The announcement comes five years after the $386 billion AUKUS defence pact was signed in 2021.
