Sydney tops Australia's remote work rankings

Sydney ranked best Australian city for remote work with a score of 65.4, despite high living costs pulling its overall rating down.

Accounting software firm Reckon ranked 20 Australian cities for remote work across internet speed, climate, living costs, safety, health access, culture, and fitness. Sydney came first with 65.4 out of 100, followed by Brisbane on 62.2 and Melbourne on 59.1.

Sydney won despite poor scores on affordability because it performed strongly almost everywhere else. Sydney scored perfect marks for safety (100/100), strong culture ratings (93.1), and had Australia's fastest internet.

Brisbane ranked second largely thanks to excellent weather (98.9 out of 100) and fast internet. Melbourne finished third with a perfect culture score but was held back by poor weather.

The survey of 1,000 Australians found affordability is the most important factor for remote workers at 18.53 per cent weighting. But one city's strength across other measures can outweigh weakness in a heavily weighted factor.

Thirty-six per cent of Australian workers usually work from home.
