Canberra's Mexican community celebrates Day of the Dead this weekend
Canberra's Latin American community celebrates Día de los Muertos this weekend.
Dickson's Poppyfield Street becomes a Mexican fiesta this weekend. Canberra's Latin American community celebrates Día de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead.
The festival runs Saturday and Sunday. Saturday features live Latin folk music and samba percussion.
Traditional Mexican dance, a street parade, and a costume competition also happen. Sunday offers shadow puppetry and a screening of Pixar's Coco.
Market stalls and a community ofrenda, a memorial altar, are also there. In this tradition, people die three times.
They die when they breathe their last, when they are buried, and when their name is spoken for the last time. Families place photos and marigolds on altars to remember ancestors.
Festival organiser Emmanuel Rodríguez said Canberra has hosted celebrations for a decade. He hopes to expand them.
