Australia and Jordan pledge closer defence ties as Palestinian elections stall

King Abdullah II and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese committed to deeper defense cooperation. Palestinian elections face a one-year delay.

King Abdullah II and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed their support for a two-state solution during talks in Canberra this week. The leaders jointly condemned Israel's E1 settlement project in the occupied West Bank.

Australia and Jordan committed to military training and counter-terrorism cooperation. Australia also confirmed support for Jordan's humanitarian work in Gaza.

Mahmoud Abbas postponed Palestinian elections until September 2027. This raises concerns about conditions Australia set when recognizing Palestinian statehood a year ago.

Foreign ministers from Australia, Canada, France and the UK expressed deep regret at the delay, saying it would harm public confidence in Palestinian democratic institutions.
