Cox Plate races at Flemington for first time since 1922
The only Cox Plate to run at Flemington moves from Moonee Valley this year, Australia's most prestigious horse race.
The W.S. Cox Plate, run at Moonee Valley since 1922, races at Flemington on Saturday for the first time ever.
Moonee Valley is undergoing major redevelopment, forcing the 2040-metre weight-for-age championship to shift to nearby Flemington temporarily. The relocation changes how the race unfolds: Flemington's long straights and sweeping turns replace Moonee Valley's tight loop.
A 12-horse field includes betting favourites like Chris Waller's mare Aeliana and Waterhouse-Bott's stallion Sir Delius. The race returns to Moonee Valley next year with a redesigned track rotated 90 degrees.
