Toby Greene tipped for Geelong captaincy despite never playing for club
AFL commentator Kane Cornes says new recruit Toby Greene should become Geelong captain next year.
Toby Greene joined Geelong as a free agent this month after being with the Giants. The 33-year-old has serious credentials: three All-Australian selections, two best-and-fairest awards, and 450 goals in 282 games.
Greene captained the Giants for five seasons and became their greatest ever player. Now one AFL commentator thinks he should step straight into Geelong's captaincy.
Channel 7's Kane Cornes argued on radio that Greene is the most credentialled player on Geelong's list to lead the team. He would be better positioned than current captain Patrick Dangerfield (who will be 37 next April) and Tom Stewart, Dangerfield's deputy.
Cornes acknowledged the idea would face strong disagreement and conceded it is unlikely to happen. No player has been appointed captain in their first year since Chris Judd at Carlton in 2008.
